Sports Camp/Fear Factor Camp

This week was really rough. In the mornings I was working with a Youth Programs staff member as the lead for a 6-8 yr olds in Sports Camp. This camp was better than the last 6-8 Sports Camp I'd done, but it's difficult to please everyone in that age group during sports. Most kids like soccer, but aren't good at it. So we did alot of activities to work on their basic motor skills like relays and tag games. We had a parent complain that their child wasn't actually playing sports. The funny part of that story is that the girl who's parent complained was sitting out and would rather color than play soccer anyway. Oh well! The second camp of the day was Fear Factor Camp run by another Youth Programs staff member but who is really unorganized and acts as old as the kids he's incharge of...9-12. It was very frustrating trying to keep the attention of not only the kids but keeping track of our lead counselor...uhg!
The week got worse when I woke up Wednesday with a horrible stomach ache and feeling like I had a fever. I was allowed to get to work an hour late so I showed up just in time for our blitz (song/dance fest) but I didn't feel well enough to be super energetic. I chose that day to be the counselor who sits with the kids that don't participate. That afternoon I felt a bit better but still not 100%. I was fine Thursday. When I got to work on Thursday however, I found out that the lead counselor for Fear Factor Camp was sick and that I had been appointed to take over. Awesome! I had no supplies, a plan that had been used with little success and only the morning to figure it all out. Yikes! Luckily we had a speaker (Trevor Romaine) that would be taking up the first hour and a half of the time. I then had the kids play a game called Dead Rabbit (I called it the elimination game) we had three teams, one team stood on each side of the gym, the team on the far side's goal was to make it to the other side without getting hit by the dodgeballs that were being thrown at them from the other teams. It was pretty successful the kids seamed to enjoy it. Next I set up a karoaki stage and had them sing in front of everyone and if they were really good the other teams could throw fruit loops at them. The fruit loops were kind of a disaster, but the kids overall seamed to have a lot of fun.
Trevor Romaine was awesome! The kids loved him. He talked about bullying and the service the kids are doing for their country by being in Germany and told Duh jokes like "did you know on the tag of the baby rocker it says: remove infant before storage...duh! can you imagine opening the cupboard in the morning and there's baby still rocking!"
That was the short version of my week. Oh but funny story so we went to see "the Proposal" with Sandra Bullock at the base theater for $4.50. The movie was supposed to start at 7 so we got their at 7 and everyone was standing outside the theater. Turned out the supervisor forgot to show up to open the doors so we didn't start the movie until almost 8pm. When it started the commercials being shown seemed way older than the movie about to play, sure enough they had put in the wrong film. They finally got the right one in and the opening commercial was a military choir singing the national anthem infront of a bunch of national monuments. It was really random and funny to me especially because it was an extra fancy version of the song and the choir was always standing in the wind in perfect formation. Oh and we had to stand to watch this part of the "movie" it made me laugh...it's a movie theater, not the ball park.
The end.
