4th of July

Being in the largest community of Americans outside the US (Kaiserslautern Military Community) for the 4th of July was a blast!
We were in-charge of the bouncy castles and face-painting area for the kids at the Freedom Festival. We arrived at 11:30 only to find out the festival didn't start until 2...we were in-charge of setting up...for 2 and a half hours...oh but we got an hour long break for lunch...too bad all the food places weren't open until 2 too! But face-painting was really fun. We began practicing on ourselves drawing flags, fireworks, stars and other festive things on our faces, hands, and arms. The kids arrived a bit before 2 in small numbers and most of them wanted butterflies or flowers on their faces. I asked one girl what she wanted and she looked at the colors and said "yellow" and I said "a yellow what? how 'bout a flower," she nodded excitedly so I gave her a yellow daisy with orange middle and two green leaves on the side. When I held the mirror up for her to see she smiled and said excitedly "I'm beautiful!" It made me feel so good inside.
My shift got off at 4:30 and we were bussed back to the apartment. I took a nap and got ready to go back to the festival for dinner and fireworks. I went back at 8:30 and spent the next two hours standing in food lines only to be told "oh sorry we're out" about three times before eating cold corn on the cob and a brat. Then I stood in line for a funnel cake...there were 3 funnel cake stands and all of them had lines about 100 people long and none of the lines were moving...I finally gave up at 10:30 when the fireworks show was about to begin. The air-force knows how to do fireworks. They were spectacular! There was no wind so the smoke cloud surrounding the fireworks was enormous but you could still see the orange glowing full moon...I had a good fourth.
