Today was my first real day working as Camp Adventure. There are 5 CA people at my site (Youth Center). We split up to help manage different age groups. I had volunteered last week to help take the 6-8 year olds on the Travel Camp this week. Today was the zoo. I had been really excited to see the zoo and the kids faces when they saw the different animals. I was pretty disappointed...
After a nearly 2 hour bus ride the kids all had to go to the bathroom. Unfortunately the zoo's signs were all in German (go figure) and there was no map. So we wandered around allowing the kids to see the penguins and the Elephants before we finally found a bathroom. Once all the kids were pottied and ready to go they were complaining of being hungry so we began a hunt for somewhere to eat. Since not everyone packed a lunch we needed to find somewhere that sold food and had seating for 21 kids. As we began to sit down it started raining. So we tried to make lunch last as long as possible in hopes that the rain would slow...it got worse. So we bustled the kids to only indoor exhibit - the hippos. I nearly cried. The poor hippos were living in an area approximately 12 square feet, it was appauling. There wasn't even enough water for both hippos to comfortably be in the water. But since it was inside we spent quite a lot of time in there. Then we went to the petting zoo and for many more smaller animals such as 5 rabbits they had a huge exhibit. What in the world! Thankfully the petting area was covered so we could stay there to try to escape the next down pour. By this time it was time to get the kids to the bathroom and on the bus for another 2 hour drive. I felt bad for the kids, they were soked, tired, and had gotten to see abour 4 animals. Hopefully our trip to the indoor science center will go better tomorrow.
