This last week I got to be in cooking camp with the 6-8 yr olds in the morning. The cooking theme was Asian food (which meant mostly Chinese food). The kids were a bit rambunctious and could care less about cooking and only wanted to eat the cakes we made (because cake is so Asian!...not!). The most exciting thing that happened in that camp was a little girl that was using her knife to hack away at the cutting board with no vegetables on it...after telling her repeatedly that the knifes were used to saw the veggies and when she was done to put the knife down I came back over to her and was picking a few veggie tops out of the bowl that shouldn't have gone in when this same girl began to hack away at the bucket...only my finger got in her way. Luckily I was wearing gloves and the knife edge hit me at an angle that didn't slice too much of her finger. I got quite upset at her and took the knife away before running away to the bathroom to clean the cut and put a bandaid on it.
In the afternoons I was helping with the 9-12 yr old Reality Camp (a camp where each day is supposed to be like a different reality show). I had done this camp once before and had really enjoyed it. This week was similar, but the group was larger than the last Reality Camp I had helped with so the dynamics were a little different. The kids enjoyed dressing up for Top Model day and running around for the Amazing Race. At the end of the week the counselors got pied in the face by the winning team and the losing team was slimed with the second to last team...only one of the kids thought it would be funny to splash the slime on me instead. I was a bit upset mostly because it got on my shoes and I had a train to catch after work and my shoes were now covered with slime and whipped cream.
The only truly exciting thing that happened was that all of our volunteers that have been such a big help this summer are going back to school and were leaving Friday. We threw them a little party during lunch and gave them lots of hugs and thank yous. I don't know how next week will run without having all those volunteers to help out, we shall see.
